Over the course of 2008, the photographer James Fennell and I spent about three months on the road researching the best pubs in Ireland for the book ‘The Irish Pub.’ This was an arduous task, which we did just for you. You can read about our travels by clicking here. We came home having photographed about 70 pubs and spoken with perhaps as many publicans. However, in order to give each pub the four to six page spreads we felt they deserved, we had to make some radical decisions in the final furlongs. We just didn’t have enough pages to fit them all in.
Hence, we had to drop over 30 of the pubs we photographed from the book, any of which would have been perfectly suited to the theme.
The 39 pubs that ultimately made the book are listed below. While the essence of every pub was traditional, we included a shorter chapter examining the more contemporary interpretations of that style. The classifications for urban retreats and rural charm were always vague and there are several pubs who could feasibly fit into either chapter.
